That’s the question that popped into my head the other day. With the recent record foreclosure rates, the number of distressed homeowners out there, several years of negative economic news, and increased restrictions on credit, it made me wonder if Americans still have the dream of owning their own home.
Well the short answer, according to a recent survey, is Yes! Owning a home is still part of the American dream. Fannie Mae conducted a National Housing Survey, as reported by DSNews.com in their article “Americans Continue to Value Homeownership, Survey Shows.” The recent survey results (Dec. 09 and Jan. 10) indicated that Americans still have a desire for homeownership, but they feel that owning a home is no longer the safest financial investment. More of the survey respondents feel that it is safer to put money in a money market or savings account.
Interestingly, almost two-thirds of the respondents think that now is a good time to buy a home and almost one-third of the respondents think that now is a “very” good time to buy a home.
So what are your thoughts? Is homeownership still part of your American dream? And do you think that now is a good time to buy a home?
